Function and Mechanism

Minoxidil is a medication primarily used to treat hair loss.  Initially developed as a oral medication for high blood pressure, researchers discovered its hair growth-promoting properties as a side effect.

Minoxidil works by stimulating hair follicles and promoting blood flow to the scalp.  Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed to prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, thereby increasing hair density and thickness.  It also appears to widen hair follicles, which can result in thicker hair strands.
